#86. Dreamcatcher - Review

Dreamcatcher Jason Lee posterDreamcatcher harkens back to the early years of Stephen King film adaptations. I’m talking the IT’s and Christine’s of the world. Where tone is something that can be played with and manipulated at will. Where there is a strong possibility anything and everything could be used for scares. If you thought a possessed Plymouth Fury was terrifying, than Dreamcatcher’s “Shit Weasels” will stop your heart. Anally gestated aliens, mentally handicapped ET saviors, Donnie Whalberg playing a character that isn’t a disgruntled cop! This horror movie may in fact have it all.Sorry... but this made me laugh

Explaining Dreamcatcher’s plot is somewhat of an exercise, and I really don’t want to spoil the insanity of this story anyway so I will refrain. I will say it never hesitates to skip right over “weird,” push through “bizarre,” and run headfirst into WTF territory. I mean, Tom Sizemore plays a good-guy and Morgan Freeman is the film’s antagonist! Need I say more?

The performances are all pretty great, especially Band of Brothers alumni Damian Lewis, and Underdog himself Jason Lee. The scenes that these two actors share specifically are a blast and probably the strongest moments in this film. Freeman seems to be having some fun, never really taking his role (or his eyebrows) seriously, and I dare say Sizemore is as calm and levelheaded as I have ever seen him.

I really enjoyed this film. Although it doesn’t reach the horror-highs that King’s perfect film The Mist did, it is more than worth your time. I will post the trailer down below, but I suggest anyone that may be interested just jump in headfirst and watch Dreamcatcher without any spoilers. If you need further convincing I will say it again then… SHIT WEASELS! If you watch it, or have already seen it then let me know what you thought.

#85. Evil Dead 2 - Review

I watched Evil Dead 2 in my Film Genre: Horror class earlier this week. I know the Sam Raimi trilogy is super cool and ironic (in a “I know its terrible, but I love it anyway” way), but I do think I need to hold off on watching it again for at least a decade, if not longer. I mean, unlike a lot of people who were introduced to the Evil Dead series in high school or college, I literally grew up with this franchise. I had 1 & 2 on VHS growing up, and I saw Army of Darkness in the theater! I am not trying to brag, but I don’t want to get any crap for saying Evil Dead 2 felt tired to me. It’s my fault, I know. I have probably watched 2 specifically at least 30 times. The opening is brilliant, and the hand bit to this day is still unmatched. Bruce Campbell plays Ash with a heroic gravitas that is still a little bit more subdued than his full-blown caricature in Army of Darkness. I am not complaining about the film, I just need to take a step back for a while, that’s all.

#84. Sunset Boulevard - Review

Sunset Boulevard film posterI am not going to sit here and lecture you on why you must watch Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard. If you love cinema than you will watch it. If you don’t love cinema, give it a chance, I can promise you will after the credits roll. My words really mean nothing, and I couldn’t do this film justice anyhow, so please, let it speak for itself and give it a chance.

I'm Baaaaack!

Ok so I know its been a couple weeks since my last entry. I was assistant directing for Chapman and then got super sick (like had to go to the ER sick), but I am all better now. School is back in session and the movies are coming fast and furious so I will need to update my backlog as quickly as possible. I have been keeping a list of the movies I have watched which I have attached below. Because there are close to 40 flicks I need to write about, I will not be writing long reactions, but I will try and get the site up to date for those of you keeping track (hi Beth and Cory)...
